The History of Steele Mansion
Steele Mansion was built in 1867 as the home of George Steele and his family. At that time, the town of Painesville, Ohio, had never seen a home so spectacular! The daily newspaper described the mansion as the grandest home in town, and Steele Mansion earned its name as the “Jewel of Painesville.”
This elegant mansion offers a glimpse into the life of the 19th-century elite. Its French Second Empire-style design was immensely popular during the mid-1850s. Today, Steele Mansion serves as an immaculate example of an architectural style that once took the world by storm.
The Jewel of Painesville Today
It is an amazing feat that the historic Steele Mansion is still standing today. In 2010, the Shamakian Family purchased this beloved home. At the time of purchase, the family was unaware that a demolition decree was ordered for spring 2011. However, the Shamakian Family managed to save the mansion and put the demolition to a stop.
The original brick walls and the grand walnut staircase stood strong, but the mansion was in need of serious repair. The immediate time following was spent saving the home from collapse. In 2015, renovations were complete, and Steele Mansion reopened its doors to the public. Tours of the historic mansion are available for $10 per person.

- During the 19th century, Steele Mansion had its fair share of famous guests! Frequent visitors of the beautiful mansion included presidents James A. Garfield, Rutherford B. Hayes, and Ulysses S. Grant.
- The horror movie, Ghost Babe, was filmed at Steele Mansion in the summer of 2018. The movie premieres March 2019!
