How to Plan for the Best Ice Fishing on Lake Erie

Before Your Trip

When planning a Lake Erie fishing trip, safety is of utmost importance. Because this sport is dependent on ice conditions on the lake, you will need to check the weather in advance and plan your trip accordingly. During stretches of time that temperatures are above freezing, ice weakens quickly. If you are planning your own excursion, please remember to:

  • Test the thickness of ice before recreation. For detailed information on the minimum recommended thickness, visit the ODNR Division of Wildlife website.
  • Always wear a life jacket.
  • Plan your trip with a group of anglers and don’t fish alone. If you do fall through the ice, someone in your group may be able to help you get out.
  • Be aware of changes in ice thickness as you traverse the lake.

For the reasons above, we recommend embarking on an ice fishing trip with a licensed ice guide. An ice fishing charter is the best way to make the most of your trip.
